Mise en scene

There are some things that the film-maker chooses to put in this scene. Such as the tall buildings and pile of rubbish and junks. The film maker chooses to put this here as it is uses the technique of contrast. Contrast between the ruined Earth. The tall buildings represents the advanced and nice environment we once lived in whereas the pile of rubbish and junks symbolizes the place now. Dirty and Untidy.

The reason why the pile of rubbish beside overlapped the tall buildings(how the pile of rubbish is much taller than the buildings) is  because the film maker is trying to make a point. That the earth now is a really dirty place, not like what it all used to be. Beautiful and full of life.

Lighting and Color

The lighting in this scene is very effective as it  goes well along with the music. The lighting in the part where the the buildings and garbage are shown are dull and sepia. The reason why the dull lighting is being used is because it is shaping the viewers emotional response, the feeling of sadness and emptiness. Dull lighting goes well along with the hopeful music. It is really making the viewers feel that the scene is hopeful yet sad and lonely.

The color sepia is being used also as it brings in the idea of the setting having it in a different time (the 60's). It is relevant to the whole movie as the opening scene(the beginnning of the movie)shows the earth in the past.
In the near end of the movie when people are starting to plant things... the color sepia has been changed to full colors.

It means that in the beginning of the movie, sepia has been used to display Earth having no life... but it is changed when a tree has been planted, a symbol for a new beginning, Life.

Music and Sound

The Opening scene uses the song "put on your Sunday clothes". It is used to let the viewers absorb the emotion of the music. It is very effective as the techniques of contrast is being used. Between the normal Earth and the ruined Earth that we see in this scene. The line from the song "there's lots of worlds out there" is very effective as well because it puts you in a point of view where you can feel the line and will be hopeful of transforming the ruined earth back to normal, which the movie is really all about... Reviving our planet.

The opening scene also uses the sound of "blowing wind at the near end of the scene to help convey the idea of emptiness and loneliness, of the scene. It also helps viewers to notice that the scene uses contrast between the ruined earth.

Angle and camera movement

The birds eye view angle shot has been used in the scene to let the viewers see the overall establishing shot of the scene.
Lets the viewers see a more wider variation of the setting. Another Camera movement technique that has been used is the Aerial shot, this shot has been used also to let the the viewers see what the setting is like. Such as tall buildings, huge piles of rubbish and junks.

The Shots that has been used that i am studying in this opening scene is very effective as it draws you in. Puts you into a viewers point of view. How it shocks you for what you will see. The planet earth as we know now; Full of life, living creatures, flowers, plants, trees etc... is not the same as what we will see in this scene. A planet full of garbage.

Although i have said that the purpose of using the birds eye view angle shot and aerial shot is to let the viewers see a more wider variation of the setting. It also creates an emotional effect. To shape the viewers emotional response. The emotional feeling of  sadness and emptiness as it is displaying the planet earth having  no life, so lonely and empty.

Genre/atmosphere

The tone and the mood of the opening scene is Hopefull and kind of happy at the beginning (The music helps set that tone and mood of the scene) However, when the music faded... The mood is suddenly changed from hopefull and happy to sad and empty. In the near end of the scene when the music stopped the sound of the blowing wind took over, and helps create the mood of "emptiness".

Opening scene description

I am choosing to study the opening scene of the movie wall e.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vx-4Hz_W-TY
The opening scene starts with the pixar logo and the hopping lamp. Then it cuts, and the scene shows the galaxy(stars, milky way, other planets etc)and the word "Walt disney picture presents".  The camera uses the pan technique as the camera looks from the galaxy ..... to the planet Earth and it goes all the way through too let the viewers see what its composed of.

The opening scene fits into the film as a whole as it is shows what the subject of the movie is. The planet "Earth".

This opening scene appeals to me because its good.
